Soil Engineering Investigate Subsidence on M80

Ground Investigation Framework supplier Soil Engineering Geoservices have been engaged on the M80 by The Coal Authority and BEAR Scotland to investigate a subsidence feature at the Junction 9 off-slip.

Staffed from the local office at Coatbridge, the project team includes Cable Percussion and Rotary Drilling Crews, as well as a lead Engineering Geologist to provide a continual flow of information to the client’s team. The investigation scope includes the formation of boreholes away from the subsidence location for benchmarking purposes, followed by investigation of the subsided area itself. Forming a detailed geological model of the site in this manner will allow a more detailed understanding of ground conditions, supporting the identification and remediation of the feature and its root cause.

Safe access for the drilling rigs to undertake the works in the area affected by subsidence has been provided by the use of one of Soil Engineering’s in-house safety platforms. Designed to support the rig while spanning the affected area, the platform facilitates a level working area for the crew whilst isolating them from the risk of further settlement, and is standard practice in these and similar circumstances.

Soil Engineering have a significant history of undertaking similar critical investigations for The Coal Authority across the UK, previously providing vital data at sites including Saltcoats and Mitchell Street. The M80 works take the number of investigation or treatment projects delivered for The Coal Authority to over 70 since 2020.
